Briefly explain what the film presents about the influence of the media and how does Truman show this?
=]
have you seen the Truman Show?
the whole film is about a man being followed by cameras for his whole life without his knowledge- a big brother extreme.
for one, they use product placement in the programme (like the wife and the hot chocolate or whatever it is) so the audience can use/buy anything thats seen on the programme. and people DO buy loads of the stuff they see- thats influence.
its voyeuristic- this mans life is being documented completely which, if you think about it, is extremely boring. There are going to be hours of him on the loo, sleeping, eating, showering...etc. doing mundane every day tasks. BUT because the media is broadcasting it and therefore promoting it as an interesting programme, the audience view it as that. THATS INFLUENCE.
I mean, think about big brother. PEOPLE SPEND HOURS WATCHING THE HOUSE MATES SLEEPING. if you went to a house and watched a stranger sleeping in the real world you'd be called a stalker and a psycho, but as soon as the media gets involved and you dont even have to move from your chair...its entertainment. the media has the power to influence decisions on the moral correctness of a situation.
In terms of Truman, what an invasion of privacy!
It sounds ridiculous, but im getting obsessed with the fact that im on the truman show, and collecting evidence to prove it! Is that absolutely mad?
Here's a concept for you: Situation Appropriate Paranoia.
That's an actual *diagnosis* in the DSM-IV. *lol* In plain English what it means is, yes, even the shrinks and therapists have to admit that on occasion, "Just because you're paranoid, that doesn't *mean* folks aren't out to get you."
Essentially, it's like this:
--The internet is so wide open and public it's frightening to think about. *Any* mediocre programmer can point-and-click his way into making malware, sneaking it onto a legit-looking shopping site, and using it to pilfer your computer and know *everything* about you. It's become easy enough for an office drone to do these days.
The *ONLY* thing stopping the internet from being a total surveillance area is its size. Over a billion people use the internet worldwide, so unless you know *exactly* what to look for, some needles are harder to find in this haystack than others.
--Militaries in developed nations the world over are busy working on getting their spy satellites working from the meter range (seeing things at a resolution of feet to yards across) to the centimeter range (seeing things at a resolution of inches across or less).
Current spy satellite technology, the civilian version that is, can already identify cars. The current military version can tell when *someone* leaves a car, but it's a blur. The tech in the works would allow folks to ID *faces* from high orbit.
--Unless folks in the United States get a *miraculous* stroke of good luck going on for the next decade or so...we in America are going to be *stuck* with a Homeland Security situation that is anything BUT secure, Disaster Rescue and Relief that does neither of these things, and an over-stretched military too *broke* to hold the line against everyone who wants us dead.
Basically, it's a case of our economy going *kaput* at roughly the same time that our enemies worldwide are really starting to get *wealthy*--much of it at *OUR* expense mind you thanks to downsourcing and outsourcing....
Globalist economics have basically turned the USA into a "reverse empire" in a way that the old Soviet Union was before *it* went bankrupt and collapsed. I doubt this is an accident.
--And well, there *are* the Companies, aren't there? The filthy rich, backstabbing companies that ruin every last thing they touch (like Yahoo perhaps?)
Let's just look at it like this....when McDonald's starts to look like an *occupying army* and when Wal-Mart and Microsoft both could *easily* apply for statehood....you know something's wrong here. You'll know that folks aren't even pretending to be polite or subtle about it anymore, that we're being railroaded straight into a "Jennifer Government" scenario where there are no nations, only *Plantations*, and where everyone is chipped out and barcoded to the nines.
Essentially, we are headed towards One Nation, Under House Arrest, where folks are *presumed* criminal until *proven* innocent, provisionally, in the eyes of the latest Company Massuh....bet on it.
Just saying. ^_^ You're paranoid, but there's just cause for it. We ordinary citizens *have no friends*, not even each other, that's just politically "incorrect" according to the "rugged individuals" at Fox News don't you know....
Take care and try not to let it get to you...so far the police state's only really here if you're poor-to-broke....o_o If you have money you're still good. For now.
I need to write a term paper on a sociological movie, and I chose the Truman Show. What perspective should I go for? Symbolic Interaction or Functionalism? I could even do Conflict, too...
Thanks!

To me, the movie embellished the notion that one's perceptions are truly one's reality.
I have to write an essay comparing the giver and the truman show, and comparing isn't really the tough part for me, but if you have any comparisons that would help a lot. What the trouble is, is that my teacher says that my hook has to be: define utopia and give a brief history of an attempt to create a utopia in the past. I can't think of any! Please help! Thanks
an utopia is like a perfect society like in the book the giver everything is in order but keep in mind that the "governement" keeps everything from the city, and their occupations are choosen for them at a certain age
its extremely easier to create a utopian society in the past rather than now because now there are things you can not get rid of to create a utopian society like violence [self-explainitory] i dont have to explain
keep in mind that utopia -- means a perfect society
feelings [sad, angry] are unexperience
