I point a telescope at a full moon one night so that the moon is centered in the eyepiece, and I leave the telescope locked in this position. If I understand correctly, the moon will shift a few degrees each night either north or south of the east-west line, so on the second day the moon will not be centered in the eyepiece. After how many days will the moon (any phase) be centered in the telescope again? How long before the next full moon is centered in this telescope?
The Moon returns to the same point in the sky every 27.3 days, on average. The simple answer to your question would be 27 days, but the Moon may not necessarily be centred due to its north or south movement during the extra 0.3 days.
After 27 days, the Moon will no longer be in the same position relative to the Sun, so you'll see a different phase. You would have to wait a year to see a full moon in the same part of the sky
Our two cats are running laps around the house, fighting with each other and being all around hyper since yesterday. We think it's due to the full moon. I read once that pet emergency rooms (as well as human ones) are usually the most busy during the nights of a full moon. I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this crazy full-moon behavior with your pets OR with yourselves?
My palms get hairy, my jaw gets longer and longer - my teeth get bigger, I get the urge to chew on Michael Vick ===
never mind, I don't need a full moon for that.
I am due January 17th and Im already 2 cm dialted according to my last ob visit on Wednesday...Now I know the full moon is coming this Sunday and where I live in NJ we are also expecting a big snowstorm Saturday until Sunday... I've read up on the full moon and babies being born and I think this might be it... Anyone have any stories or outlook on the full moon/ storms and labor starting?
Statistically, more women give birth during a full moon than any other of its cycles. This is a relic of genetic predisposition that comes from our genetic ancestors who gained a survival benefit from giving birth during certain cycles of the moon. For example, turtles lay their eggs so that their hatchlings will be birthed during the highest of high tides (caused by a phase of the moon) so they will have a higher chance of surviving.
I don't get it... I thought a new moon was black because the earth was blocking the sun's light from reflecting off the moon. But a couple weeks ago we had an eclipse of the moon, and they said it was because the earth was getting between the moon and the sun. The moon wasn't as black as a new moon. I'm not an astronomer. What's the difference? Thanks!, Paul
An eclipse of the moon occurs on a full moon day when the earth is in between the sun and the moon.In this condition, the shadow of the earth falls partially on the moon and a part of the earth's curvature can be seen on the moon. This is not happening every time the earth is in between the sun and the moon because the plane of orbit of the moon and the plane of orbit of the earth are different.
A new moon occurs when the the moon is in between the sun and the earth in which case we see only the unlit face of the moon.So it is dark.Solar eclipse occurs on a new moon day and why it is not happening every time these are in the above order is due to the same reason explained above.
