I just flew from Munich to Orlando and was surprised to see the route that we took went over Iceland, to the Northeast US and down the East coast of the US before getting to Orlando. Why couldn't we take a direct route instead?

In reality, there is no "right" way up or down. But people want there to be. According to a recent article, if people cannot see out of the Shuttle, the orient themselves randomly. But if they can have even the slightest glimpse of the Earth, everybody automatically aligns themselves so their feet point towards it. So though there is no real right way up, people manufacture it for themselves.

I live in Michigan as of now and the East coast would cost less.
Travel and like air fair from east coast is alot less expensive than going to Cali. Plus the cost of living in Cali is alot higher and I plan on moving there permanently.
