At the very beginning of the movie, he was the only robot doing his job by making trash cubes. He took parts from other robots to use as his own. Why is he the only one left?
It was due to the personality quirks that he developed. He prioritized preservation over cleaning up the trash (While this was not spelled out in the movie, it could be infurred by his collection of stuff and his interest in preserving the cockroach).
My guess is that when there were dust storms (as were seen several times in the movie), the other robots were concentrating on picking up the trash and thus were eventually all damaged beyond repair by the storms. Wall-E retreated to his "home" during these storms and waited them out (just as he did with EVE in one particular scene of the movie).
His collection of pieces from the other robots also allowed him to repair himself when he would get some damage.
So, in short, he developed an interest in preserving things, and that led to self-preservation.
