How is slavery different from modern times to 19th century slavery?
Street Candid ~ Exodus 20:3

I'm confused as to how slavery is different in modern times from old slavery in the 19th century. At this time I'm interested on information in the United States.

Well, unfortunately, in modern times if you try to enslave someone (no matter how black he or she may be) you can be imprisoned. They were much more lenient during the 19th century. Other than the risk of imprisonment and the technological advances made to the cotton gin; however, not much has changed, as long as you don't get caught with slaves. I hear that now it is actually more acceptable to enslave Mexicans because they are better cooks.

Can we live happily in these modern times, if we are always concerned about others?
Blue Hour at Midtown Manhattan - A Crystal Wonderland - Reprocessed with Photomatix

One cannot live happily in these modern times, if he or she is always concerned about others, especially those existing in faraway, remote places. Taking the best of care of one's own family is a full-time concern.

It's true. I think that our society dwells on all the negative things. Especially the media, it's like can't we just for once talk about something fun and positive. I mean how can you ever be happy if you always just dwell on all the bad things going on in the world. You just have to get away from that and think about the good things in life. I should be taking my own advice because I sometimes find myself dwelling on things that are negative instead of positive. But it happens. All I am saying though is that our society needs to change because if we keep on dwelling on all the negative things you will never be happy.

How do you think Anne Boleyn would be represented in modern times?

I want to write a story thats inspired by Anne Boleyn, but in modern times. How do think of her represented in modern times? thanks :)
steven: don't you think thats a little harsh?

First of all, I have no idea how someone can compare Paris Hilton and Madonna to Anne Boleyn.

Second, she doesn't really compare to anyone famous in modern times.
You have to look and her character traits, to answer this question.

And I think you will find that she was very intelligent, ambitious, socially inclined, and influential.
She more or less used "the new religion" to convince Henry that the Pope did not have more power over England than Henry himself did, and that Henry could make his own rules.

The best thing you can do, if you want to write a story inspired by her, is read about her. Eric Ives put out a book not too long ago about her, called The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn. It is absolutely the best book written about her life thus far.

Good luck.

EDIT - The last thing is, I think that a lot of people are watching The Tudors on Showtime, and they think of her as how she is portrayed in the show. That show infuriates me, because although I thought some parts of it were very good, the way they portrayed Anne Boleyn was all wrong. They showed her as a pretty whore and nothing else. The truth is that Anne was so intelligent, and used so much calculation to get to the throne. She put herself there. She was not beautiful, but her mind and intelligence were so amazing, that's how she got there. You have to admire her. People who don't admire her don't understand.

What philosophical questions are facing us in modern times?
Motorway Horse

in the past people have asked 'how do we know that we exist?' and other intrigueing questions. But what philosophical questions do we face specifically in our modern times?

some examples:
'if i cloned myself and had intercourse with my clone, would that be male incest or masturbation?'

I will give you some examples:

1. Why is the world economics seems so unfair: there are extremely poor countries where people have to struggle just to have sufficient food, but in the other hand there are super-rich countries where people cry when the government reduce subsidy?

2. If we are able to create smart robots and make Artificial Intelligence systems, will they control us some day?

3. Is human cloning ethical or not? Is a human clone (if any) a human being or an animal?
