Will Smith is going to be playing the lead role in the american adaptation of the Oldboy graphic novels. Now it's already certain that it won't come close to the original korean film , but what it will be different in that it follows the books instead of diverging away from them.
What is the difference between the original manga and the film ?
Have you seen the Korean Oldboy film? I'm going to assume you have, because it'll make writing this much easier.
Ummm let's see, overall the plot in Old Boy manga was MUCH better than the Korean adaptation. The whole thing with Dae-su witnessing the incestual sex scene, causing the sister to commit suicide is completely original to the Korean movie. There is another motive (a more interesting motive in my opinion) for the manga.
Also, there were a couple of characters that weren't in the movie ( Dae-su's bartender friend and his teacher are two that come to mind), and the movie places a heavy emphasis on the people who ran the jail, using them throughout the movie, wheras the manga was done with them early on.
Even though I like the manga a lot more than the movie, there are some new things in the movie that I did love. That epic scene where Dae-su fights through the hallway full of people with just a hammer is all the movie.
So as you can see there are quite a few differences, but I have high hopes for the new adaptation.
Old Boy Trailer
The South Korean classic Oldboy is now being remade by Steven Spielberg with Will Smith starring as the main character. The writer is going to be Mark Protosevich, who wrote Smith's I am Legend.
To those who've seen the original film...how do you feel about this? I'm extremely doubtful that they'll be able to pull it off, or that the remake will have half of the impact the original did.
im extremely doubtful as well. i dont think either spielberg or smith are edgy enough to pull off the subject matter in the original movie or the manga. it deals with some pretty heavy stuff that i wont speak of for those that arent familiar with the original material. if anything they'll probably just jazz it up with more action to replace the controversial stuff which wont do it justice. this is how big comic adaptions have become, now even steven wants a piece.
I watched Oldboy the korean movie..
And I was wondering what is the real ending?
Does she finds out that he was the father?
Or those the hypnosis worked?
Your opinion on the film. :)
I thought it was great.
5 star.
I thought the guy was crazy to cut out his tongue, and should have let his lover find out the truth. Up to that point, it was a really good film.
Having seen the film and loved it, I would like to know how the manga differs from the movie. I have heard that the incentive for the manga character to imprison the protaganist is different than in the movie.
Could someone tell me what that reason is? Thanks!
Its not worth spoiling such a great manga for yourself, even if your not into manga, if you liked the movie you´ll definitely appreciate the the way they tell the original story. You can buy it, download it or read it online. I recommend it.

What was the secret that Oldboy wanted to keep from his new girlfriend? I did not get that movie completely.
The movie is about revenge. The guy was "induced" to date his own daughter by a man that had his life destroyed in the past for having relations with his own sister, and the protagonist saw them doing their 'stuff'.
