I moved lately in brooklyn, and I was surprised that buildings shut the heat at night around 11:pm and start it back at 5:00 AM.
When I asked the management they said that they comply with laws because the apartment should be warm in the morning because of old and children. Don't we need heat at night more that in the morning?
Does that happen to anyone? Do you depend on electrical heat or you complain?
Here is some info. regarding the regulations regarding heat from-
http://www.housingnyc.com/html/resources /faq/quality.html#dreading
By law, building owners must provide all tenants with the following levels of heat (During the heating season, October 1 through May 31):
* Between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., heat must register at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit when the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees;
* Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., heat must register at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees.
Tenants in New York City with heat and/or hot water complaints via the City's Citizen Service Center by dialing 311 and ask for the NYC Central Complaint Bureau's Hot Line.
In addition, rent stabilized and rent controlled tenants can file a complaint with the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (718-739-6400) if the landlord is violating the above rules. For more details, see the relevant fact sheet on our web site.
If you find that the landlord IS in fact meeting the heating standards but it still feels cold to you, you might talk with the landlord about repairing windows or other openings that are allowing drafts to enter the apartment. Sometimes some caulking, tape or insulation around windows will provide tremendous heat saving benefits.

How does spraying water on oranges save it from a cold night? and How does heat of fusion relate to that
The water and the ice it forms stays at 32F(0C), so the orange under the water and ice stays at that temp, which they can survive. Anything lower and it ruins the fruit.
32F(0C) is the heat of fusion of water.
I have this habit of showering at night, putting heat protector in my hair, then going to sleep and straightening it when I wake up. But will it still work as well?
Yes, that is what I do. But before I straighten it i usually touch it up and spray just a little more to be on the safe side.
I can use common sense and guess that a pool might heat quicker with the solar cover on, but what would be the quickest combination to heat a pool?
Running the heater with our without the solar cover on?
At night or during the day?
I dont need guesses, I want hard facts. :)
I'm trying to warm up the pool for a couple warm days coming up in a day or two, and want to run the heater as least as possible.
Thanks!
solar pool covers work excellent during the day when the sun is out. With the cover in place during the day, it is actually "concentrating" the solar energy from the sun.
So, if you want to heat up the pool with the sun, keep the cover on when your not using the pool.
i have a under heater and a heat lamp.. i can get it 80-85 no problem in the daytime...but in the nighttime the temps in the tank can sometime drop to 60-65..how can i keep it at 70-75 at night?
Never use a heat rock. These are notorious for malfunctioning and causing serious burns.
As suggested - a CHE, which is a lightless heat emitter, is excellent for night set-ups. Even the red lights at night can sometimes bother the reptile and can keep the temps too high. They do need to cool down at night - and some species actually do better with the very low temps. Not knowing what kind of reptile you have does not allow the right info on temps - so research where it needs to be and adjust accordingly with the heat device you choose.
