I am doing a presentation that requires information on the roles of men, women, and children in ancient Axum (African kingdom, now present day Ethipoia).. I am having a very very hard time finding a website with the information.
If anybody knows the roles (within society and the economy) please let me know
Axum, or Aksum, is a city in northern Ethiopia named after the Kingdom of Aksum, a naval and trading power that ruled from the region ca. 400 BC into the 10th century. The kingdom was occasionally referred to in medieval writings as "Ethiopia".
Located in the Mehakelegnaw Zone of the Tigray Region near the base of the Adwa mountains, the city has an elevation of 2,130 metres. It was the centre of the (eventual) Christian marine trading power the Aksumite Kingdom, which predated the earliest mentions in Roman era writings (around the time of the birth of Jesus) in good correlation to the expansion of Rome into northern Africa, and later when it developed into the Christian kingdom, was a quasi-ally of Byzantium against the day's Persian Empire. The historical record is unclear, primary sources being in the main limited to ancient church records.
It is believed it began a long slow decline after the 7th century due partly to Islamic groups contesting trade routes. Eventually Aksum was cut off from its principal markets in Alexandria, Byzantium and Southern Europe and its trade share was captured by Arab traders of the era. The Kingdom of Aksum also quarreled with Islamic groups over religion. Eventually the people of Aksum were forced south and their civilization declined. As the kingdom's power declined so did the influence of the city, which is believed to have lost population in the decline similar to Rome and other cities thrust away from the flow of world events. The last known (nominal) king to reign was crowned ca. 10th century, but the kingdom's influence and power ended long before that.
Good daycare costs $15,000 a year where I live. One would have to be a very high earner to raise a child on one salary.
So...if the men who fathered the children are permitted to walk away without taking responsibility, doesn't the burden then fall on the taxpayers (ironically, some of them the very same men who don't want to contribute child support)?
So...should the rest of us have to pay for the fact that he didn't appear to know that sex can lead to babies?

It's interesting because the men here were all about "I want my child and stuff the bit*ch" but no-one talked about how they adjust their working lives to actually carry out this act of martyrdom! It's like they had no clue what it takes to raise a child. It was all about winning and words, and not any response about their concerns at how they would cope with this huge life-changing challenge.
Women should not let men walk away from their responsibilities. Accidents take two people, so it's both parents responsibility. If a guy doesn't want a baby there's a very simple solution! Otherwise, they are finanacially responsible, and women need to make sure they can track down men who have fathered their children.
I think more should be done to track these guys down and make them pay, rather than just automatically pass it on to taxpayer's.
EDIT: Guys, if YOU do not use protection when you have sex, then YOU are responsible if a pregnance results just as much as her.
EDIT2: Proud Mommy - You make some good points, but what of guys who eventually grow up and realise they want to be involved in these children's lives - how very convenient for them waltzing in to the child's life after not having contributed a dime or a moment of their time to raising the child!
I often hear that the majority of people in poverty are 'women and children'.
I'm curious if anyone has any information for the number of 'men and children' who live in poverty. I have a suspicion it would be the majority of people in poverty as well.

Ginger, if you look to the answer above yours, it mentions statistics, answers the question about men living in poverty - and doesn't go off on a tirade, either.
"In the majority of cases depth of poverty is smaller among women than among men. It seems, then, that the poverty of European women is, in general, somewhat greater than the poverty of men, but the position of poor women is less severe then men living below the poverty threshold" (really agree with this statement and this seems to be the case in the US as well)

I'm having a hard time finding international "raw" clear cut (either no real info, or way to much) numbers by gender....

Personally I see too many Western women wo in thier quest to be equal, end up trying to dominate the man. I respected Judge Judy as being a fair Judge, but now I have serious doubts if she sees men like that. Men are Men, not "children who work." Is that offensive to you?
I find it offensive and I am a woman, an objective one. Women who live their lives in the public eye should be more careful not to be seen as competitive anti-male. Bad judgment Judge Judy.
