I am a 12 year old girl who loves to sing and our school play is a west side story. I don't know much about it or even who to audition for. I want to be any girl with a pretty big part with singing. I don't want to be Maria though. Please give me suggestions!
I kinda just want to know what part I can audition for. The drama teacher gave me a good part for our last play.
First I would suggest you read it. Go to the music teacher and ask her if you can audition. If not, ask what you have to do to get an audition. Explain to her that you really want this opportunity and that it is important to you to do it. She or he may be overwhelmed with your eagerness and will applaud your boldness and give you a part on the spot! Or they may give you the same opportunity to try out as they would anyone else. But first you should know something about the story so that you can learn a part. Then I think you should pick someone you would like to play from within the story. At your audition play that part that you like most. If you don't feel comfortable going to the music teacher and asking, you can ask any teacher you feel comfortable talking to and they can give you some tips on how to get an audition. If you put some effort in learning a part you will knock them dead and they won't have a choice but to cast you.
Good luck. I hope you get it.

I booked tickets to bring my girlfriend see West Side Story in London (she's crazy about the film/show and I don't understand why!). Why is this show so beloved? What does it mean to you?
One thing that it really stresses is gang violence, and the fact that the people involved in it are really just kids. When someone actually gets killed, they realize the scope of what happened, but they are unable to stop until Tony's killed and Maria tells them off and they see the sorrow that she feels - how she's ready to almost kill herself. It's a realization of how horrible violence is, and how people's lives end because of revenge.
And how terrible it is when these teenagers figure that out, after three people are dead.
Hi i want to know if anyone knows how the play West Side Story can be related or linked to a historical event in the United States. For example how the Movie Scarface is linked to the major migration of cubans to florida during the 80's.
it told about how the Porter Ric ans were discriminated
I'm thinking about auditioning for Riff for my school's production of West Side Story. My voice only goes up to about high G (above middle C). I can get an A out, but I'd be going into my head voice or pushing my chest voice and that's kind of an awkward part of my vocal range. Any suggestions? I'd prefer not to sing a song that's too overdone, but you can still suggest them.
Why is it that you people with limited range always think you can sing the lead role in a musical?.. That just totally mystifies me. You DO know that you need DANCING skills that are better than your singing skills because West Side Story has more dancing in it that singing.. right?
That being said.. here are some songs that work for a West Side Story audition...
A CERTAIN GIRL.. The Happy Time
APPLAUSE.. Applause
ARTIFICIAL FLOWERS.. Tenderloin
BEING ALIVE.. Company
BRING HIM HOME.. Les Miserables
C'EST MOI.. Camelot
CLAP YO' HANDS... Oh Kay
ELECTRICITY... Billy Elliot
FEELING GOOD.. The Roar of Greasepaint
FREEDOM.. Shenandoah
GOLDEN RAINBOW.. Golden Rainbow
I MISS THE MUSIC.. Curtains
IT'S A HARD KNOCK LIFE.. Annie
LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING.. Aspects of Love
MUDDY WATER.. Big River
NOT WHILE I'M AROUND.. Sweeney Todd
PITY THE CHILD.. Chess in Concert
STARS.. Les Miserables
THE CALLING.. Altar Boyz
TOUCH ME.. Spring Awakening
WHY GOD WHY.. Miss Saigon
I think you will find that NONE of these songs are overdone... mostly because most children of school age have probably never even HEARD of the MUSICALS they come from.... let alone have learned the songs well enough for an audiotion.
Enjoy.. and good luck
It CANNOT be from "West Side Story", by the way, but its helpful if it relates somewhat to like the singing pitch in the show I guess.Thats what the Musical teachers said at the meeting we had. I can sing soprano as well as alto, and am 14 years old.
Thanks for the help!
I think you just have to choose a song you are comfortable with, and also one that shows off your voice. You say you can sing soprano and alto, so you obviously have a very good voice range, therefore you could pretty much do any song sung by a woman!
Honestly, just pick a song you know well, and that you enjoy singing and you'll do fine.
What would you sing when you're in the shower or hum when you are walking somewhere?
Do that song.
