What was the real purpose of the court jester?

Was it to attend important trial proceedings and dance a jig to make everyone laugh?
And please describe their typical uniform.

A jester or fool is a specific type of clown mostly associated with the Middle Ages. Jesters typically wore brightly colored clothing in a motley pattern. Their hats, sometimes called the "cap' n 'bells", "cockscomb" (obsolete coxcomb), or "Schellenmütze" in German were especially distinctive; made of cloth, they were floppy with three points (liliripes) each of which had a jingle bell at the end. The three points of the hat represent the asses' ears and tail worn by jesters in earlier times. Other things distinctive about the jester were his incessant laughter and his mock scepter, known as a bauble or marotte.

One has heard a rumour that Bernard Manning had been offered the job prior to his expiration but Prince Philip objected on the grounds that he was far too tame.
Apparently Philip the Greek is now lobbying quite strongly for this Roy Chubby Brown fellow to be given the position.

Is there still such a thing as a COURT JESTER? If so, how can I apply for the job? ?

I'm a funny guy, and I would make a great Court Jester. Queen Liz needs a good laugh every now and then, and I could make her laugh.

Sure you can. As long as you look good in tights.

Hehhehheeh!

In medieval Europe, was a court jester very highly valued?

Especially if he was good at it.

Jesters were only useful for entertainment and were not that important. They had no political power, in times of war and crucial decisions the jester was not needed to entertain. But the jesters had to be able to entertain the king in many ways including jokes, songs, card tricks, etc. Jesters also needed to be quick witted.
