I'm a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal's work and I've always been fond of the movie Donnie Darko. I've purchased the Directors cut and the theoretical version a while ago and I've always thought I understood this movie but the Directors Cut seemed to have made me a little more confused yet it still cleared a few questions I had for the movie up. I've watched both movies several times, read up on a few things about it on the Internet, but a lot of people have different explanations for this movie, which confuses me even more. I was wondering if someone can give me a correct and thorough explanation of the movie starting from, perhaps, the very beginning? Explaining what a Tangent and Primary Universe is, etc. so that I could keep my thoughts in check and see if I have the right idea of this film. How/why the engine went back in time, why Donnie later on in the movie sent the engine back to what looked like the same point in time that it fell through his room the first time around.

Someone asked a qu. about this recently. Here is a link to the answers. Maybe you could email someone for further discussion.

the trailer for donnie darko
I have rented the movie, and I love it. However, I rented the Director's Cut, which apparently has 20 or so extra minutes of footage, and some rearrangements. I have racked my brain, trying to think of scenes that could have been extended or added, but I have failed. Basically, can someone explain to me the difference between the original "Donnie Darko" and the Director's Cut?
Take a look at this link to see the difference:

A version of the US Anthem plays at the very end of the end titles in the director's cut of the movie Donnie Darko.
I wish I knew at least the name of the singer.
Thank you!
Donnie Darko is a movie, "a modern day of Catcher in the Rye"
i have no idea how they compare, please help me out!
I don't really know either character, but what I would suggest is to do some freewriting. In other words, write things you know about each character.
Here's an example of what I mean:
Johnny: Loves to bike; draws as an escape; dad is cheating on mom, mom ignores it; sister makes fun of Johnny; Johnny loves to go to the stream and throw pebbles.
Glenn: Loves to bike; writes poetry as an escape; parents divorced, dad not in the picture except for random appearances; sister is close with Glenn; Glenn has a girlfriend who dumps him for his best friend.
What genre of movie would you say 'Donnie Darko' is?
I went to the video rental store and looked for it, but couldn't seem to find it.
Thanks!
If there is a cult or "midnight movie" section I'd check there first. Though the film's categorization seems to be capricious and dependent on the video (or online) store you go to. I've seen it in Sci-Fi, Suspense, Thriller, Horror. One store was completely off the mark and had it in the Drama section.
