Question about the movie angels with dirty faces with james Cagney?
Angels with Dirty Faces

Do you think he dies a coward at the end of the film? I think that he did it to save the kids from a path of self destruction and a enviable death like what was happening to him. Help me out what do you think?

What a great question about a great movie. I love this cast.

Rocky would do anything for his good friend father Connley.
He needed to appear that he was a coward because the boys
that father Connley was trying to help looked up to Rocky
like he was special/hero worship. They were headed
down the same path. By crying or being yellow (all an act
for the boys) he made himself into just a coward & a thug,
no one special for them to idolize. Right before Cagney is
led to the electric chair there is that close up look he gives
to his friend right before he starts crying and has to be led
away....definately all an act!

The young boys Leo Gorcey, Bobby Jordon and the gang
went on to star in their own series of films:
The Dead End Kids, The East Side Kids & The Bowery
Boys Films. I used to watch them in reruns on tv as a
kid with my dad. Thanks for the memories!

Angels with dirty Faces (1938) Trailer

This is the trailer for the 1938 gangstermovie "Angels with dirty Faces" with James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and Humphrey Bogart in the ...

In Angels with Dirty Faces, did James Cagney go out yellow for the sake of the Dead End Kids?
AngelO's(t)

Cagney one of the best tough guys, played a heck of a role. I think the movie was years ahead of its time. But was he scared of the electric chair. Or did he look at his own life and try to make amends to the young men who looked up to him.

Cagney put on an act of last-minute cowardliness. He did it so the young fellows watching and/or listening wouldn't want to follow in his footsteps--literally and figuratively. I saw the movie only ONE time and it was MANY, MANY years ago but that last scene has remained with me ever since. Initially, if I remember right, Cagney was walking down the hallway on route to the electric chair with guards on either side of him--with his tough-guy persona intact-- when all of a sudden, he started to fiercely squirm and beg for his life--his one last, unselfish act.

Are the tenement buildings shown in the movie Angels with Dirty Faces now gone?
Angels With Dirty Faces at the Nags Head, Enderby

I love that movie and want to visit NY to view the locations
New Yorkers only

Not only are they gone, but that area, which was once slums, is now some of the most expensive real estate in all of New York City!

You see, back in the old days, there was an elevated subway train that ran along Third Avenue, called the Third Avenue El, and the area around it, all the way over to the East River, was a total slum.

Then, years later, they tore down the El, and slowly, but surely, the area got more and more gentrified, and eventually, because of the East River views, it became a haven for the rich.

So, if you'd like to look at the area today, it would be the East 60s or 70s, between 3rd Ave. and the East River, but nowadays it doesn't look ANYTHING like it did back then.

Also, I hate to tell you, although one scene was shot at Sing Sing prison, the rest of the film was shot in LA on the Warner Brothers "back lot" set, and not in NYC at all, sorry (see 2nd link, below) .

Good luck, and the link below is to a webpage about "The Third Avenue El"...

what was the role of the gangster in 1930's (Angels with dirty faces)?
Angels With Dirty Faces at the Nags Head, Enderby

y were ppl of the 1930's facinated by the gangsters --y did little kids like them so much

also what do u think the the guy who made the movie, intended (like his message?)

gangsters were emissaries of corruption. Volstead creates a bill in the Senate to make the consumption of alcohol ILLEGAL (the Prohibition Era) in an effort to reduce crime. Except the EXACT OPPOSITE HAPPENED. A culture of crime embedded itself in our country because of that moron Senator Volstead that exists TO THIS DAY.

You cannot legislate human nature. You can't make a law forbidding something people WANT TO DO. I personally don't smoke but laws against smoking are STUPID and they are going to BLOW UP IN OUR FACES.

People began perceiving gangsters as less about people who murder their children than as people defiantly standing alone against a semi-totalitarian regime.

Me, I personally despise gangsters. They aren't willing to do any work but they're willing to steal what they want. They're just parasites.
