No End in Sight

What will be our economic and civil rights consequences of a war with no end in sight?

You do know there are no limits to this war and no deadlines, no real goals being fulfilled in this war don't you? No real goals have been met as to this day and there is no end in sight as to when they will be met and our troops will pull out of Iraq. Our military is already stretched to the max and stressed. And, this war isn't cheap, it is costing our children's future education, infrastructure security, border security and port security. It is also costing us our rights with the surveillance and wire tapping of American citizens going on. So, what do you think the long term consequences will be to this never ending war? Do you think it will overall positive or negative on the country? Since we know that Iraqis are fighting al qaeda themselves, don't you think our job is done there? What exactly is our purpose for being in Iraq now? What are the consequences, psychological and physical on our soldiers who are now serving 18 month and longer over in Iraq for 2 or 3 times?

Regarding economic consequences, domestic programs and departments (public infrastructure, education, health care, social security, etc.) would be short-changed as monies allocated for such programs would be diverted to the Dept of Defense to fund an increasingly expensive occupation and possibly for other potential foreign conflicts.

As for civil rights, citizens and immigrants of Middle Eastern and Muslim backgrounds will be vigorously profiled from here to eternity as rampant fear of Islamic terrorism will drive the general public to be even more spiteful towards these groups and law enforcement to put excess and undue attention upon them. Let's not forget the unnecessary and knee-jerk reactive surveillance of those who are THOUGHT to be even remotely connected to suspected terrorists or abuse of such surveillance to spy on political adversaries and other "subversives."

How to deal with a brother who is bi polar and now is living with me with no end in sight?

I hadn't seen him for over 20 years and now he has been with us for over 6 months, we have been paying his bills, and have finally decided we can't afford to do it anymore. He has two daugthers he owes child support too, an X wife who is out for revenge, owes the IRS, and no where else to go or anyone else to ask for help. How long does it take to get disability and he wants me to do the leg work for him. My personal health is bad and I'm in a wheelchair due to rheumatoid arthritis and asthma, but I still want to help him. I just don't want to enable him or make his situation worse. He has been a member of AA for over 25 years and doesn't drink anymore. He can make it to meetings, but can't make it work due to the depression. He stays in his room all the time, and gets upset if I bring up anything about money or his not working. He is upset I can't keep paying his bills. He is going to lose his car, or end up in jail for not paying child support and I don't know what to do. Help!

With gas prices soaring and no end in sight, would now be a bad time to purchase a new SUV?

Looking to get a 4WD Toyota 4Runner V6 Sport Edition. I keep my cars for a minimum of 5 years, but I'm worried about the resale value dropping out of the bottom when gas goes to $5/gallon by the end of this year. If I have to sell it in 3 years because gas is $8/gallon, do you think anyone would want to buy it?

If you keep your cars for 5 years and you can afford the gas, why worry about resale value?

If gas prices get so high that SUV prices drop like a rock, then SUV resale value will be the least of our worries. We'll be more worried about our jobs, the economy, and the cost of everything that depends on gas prices.

This is not necessarily a bad time to buy a SUV. Prices are being discounted and some have good rebates. I'm getting a new '08 4Runner Limited next week.

Unless your finances are so tight that the difference in gas cost between a SUV and a small car will break your budget, then go for it and don't worry so much.
