The movie was basically about making the audience sympathize with the "bad guys". Tarantino also created the usage of flashbacks and other things of that nature to tell a story, thus paving the way for Memento and The Usual Suspects. Tarantino changed the way audiences accepted film narratives and the way films were shot with Reservoir Dogs.
I think Tarantino just wanted to be in the film, but knows he can't act so he picked a small part.
