I have 2000 word essay about Game Theory and how it applies to the films A Beautiful Mind and Catch Me If You Can. I am beyond stumpted, I've googled and googled but, I cannot wrap my head around it. HELP!! I Due for my economics class October 15. Help, I'll be most appreciative for the help.
Game theory is basically decision making. It is -game- theory. It's like playing a strategy game, except with risk and benefit as "numbers" (I don't know if it's that specific that you have to deal with numbers?).
A Beautiful Mind is about, basically, the creator of game theory and the Nash equilibrium, John Nash. The Nash equilibrium is the point at which both players (or all) get what they want, and get the best outcome possibly, by working together and doing what is best for themselves and the group. -Not- as Adam Smith said, one man working for himself serves the common good. Look at the prisoner's dilemma examples, those are the most common examples used to explain game theory. This will help explain it in less technical terms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqn6MXyJ3 7c.
It's not a very complicated science, even though it sounds intimidating. After all, it's a -social- science, heh.
Catch Me If You Can is also kind of game theory; it goes back and forth between the false check-writer teenager and the cop/agent chasing after him (I watched this a long time ago, I don't remember the names, sorry!). It is like strategy; a cat and mouse game if you will. They are players in a game, and assess the risk of each move before making their next move. The check-writer plays a good game, and is a good strategist. He's very clever, but in the end is caught. Here's an example from the film that I remember that -kind of- illustrates game theory...
In the last scene the check-writer and the detective are inside a building in France, where the check-writer has fled. The detective tells the check-writer that he can either run and possibly be killed by angry French police that will pursue him, or he can go quietly with the detective, and possibly get better treatment, etc. Obviously, which would you choose? Which has less risk?
Good luck. I actually like both of these movies, too, you should watch them.

In A beautiful Mind what are the various ways John Nash's disorder is treated? What works in the end? Is this usual?
first they do insulin shock therapy then they give him antipsychotic drugs niether of which work. He later only mentions taking "newer" medication, but in fact just learned to deal with and ignore the hallucinations. he suffered from Schizophrenia and was a real person (in case you didnt know lol)
How do you cultivate a beautiful mind? What does that entail?
Think positive, do good deeds, and learn to forgive.
In a Beautiful Mind, the characters play a board game, remeber?, it's was when John Nash said he was mortified, petrified, stupified? anyway, they play this boardgame, what is it, and how do you play it?
They were playing Go. It is referenced in the dialogue. With pictures and explanation,
how to play it is described in some detail here: http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_game
Source(s): Just a few of the many classic lines from that great movie.
"I'm terrified, petrified, mortified, stupified... by you."

Nash's mutterings after he loses the board game (along the lines of "the game is flawed" "I had the first move, I should have won") are in reference to "Game Theory" - the economic theory that Nash is probably most famous for.
"There has to be a mathematical explanation for how bad your tie is."
this has nothing to do with the movie, we can throw that one out right now.
in your OWN opinion, what goes into the making of a beautiful mind? what are the 'ingredients' in the mix? and how do you feel when you're lucky enough to FIND someone like this?
hint: does it have something to do with the way they organize knowledge? how they express themself? their ability to empathize? the balance between the rational and the emotional?
marius_cot: yes, i agree. happiness is much more beautiful than money, and lasts much longer too.
ryanlee: an open mind is transparent, a closed mind is, well, closed. good point!
pebbles: you make the correlation between spirit and beauty... so you learned from your bad experience. it made you who you are today.
optimismopski: wow! YOU are very articulate and enlightening... cheers to your shared connection of two beautiful minds! {clink!}
laura_bunny: yes, the ability to see BOTH sides is a beautiful thing.
zen: holy! i'm thinking that if i have the question book, YOU must have the answer one! how can i not be impressed and in total agreement?
fique: so obeying authority is a part of this too? okay!
threeicys: to answer YOUR question, i DO know someone like this. they know they are appreciated.
myus: beautifully put, and thanks for sharing scripture's say on this!
herding cats: a most creative way to think about this question! i agree, it DOES take love to 'qualify'. superb!
1st time mamma: yes you have it! and how you are raised plays a big part (the biggest?) in the forming of such a mind.
Hi Patz. Do you have a book of "Good Questions" or something? How To Exercise The Minds Of Your Friends For Not-Dummies-At-All? :-))
OK. Hmmmm.
In no particular order:
I think a mind that is beautiful must be OPEN. Considers as many aspects of a person/situation as it can see, and is always glad to have new aspects presented for consideration. It is interested in just about everything. Seeks to learn and understand.
Slow to judge, quick to forgive. Has no room for grudges and resentments. Too full of fun and curiosity. Is quick to say, "I was wrong. Forgive me."
It is hopeful. It anticpates. It see it's faults, failures and mistakes as lessons, not stumbling blocks.
Large, and well-stocked. The more intelligent and better-educated people are, the more they appeal to me, if they are also: Positive. Humorous. Quick to laugh. Quicker to laugh at themselves than anyone/anything else.
Compassion and empathy are a must. The more the better.
A beautiful mind is quick to identify, slow to hate. It gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. It finds differences between people interesting, not frightening.
It is independent. Willing to take a chance, and stand by it's choices. Always interested in the ideas of others, but doesn't give a d*mn about "what other people think."
Loyal. Always willing to stand fast in defense of a friend, or even a stranger.
Not all icy rationality, but not wholly under the control of it's emotions, either. Yes, balanced.
Loving. Giving. Generous. Wiiling to share it's knowledge, not use it as a weapon.
I love minds that are able to express themselves clearly and eloquently. Otherwise, how do I know that they are "in there"?
Whenever I find a mind like this, I feel I have discovered "riches beyond dreams of avarice."
I want to be friends.
I can't wait to see what everybody else has to say to THIS one!
When you pick Best Answer (whoever it is) I hope you tell us what YOU think!
