I need help with two questions about the Alaska Gold Rush. I just really really don't understand it at all.
1. How was the Alaska Gold Rush similar to and different from the California Gold Rush?
2. What were conditions like for settlers in Alaska? How did they adapt to the new environment?
Thanks you guys so much!
That's not all of my homework. That's just the two questions out of 15 that I didn't understand.
But thank you anyways.
Similarities - Both Alaskan Natives and California Natives were attacked, slaughtered and pushed off of their lands by travelers.
Differences - Alaska Gold Rush was more significant because there were very few people that left with less than $5,000... some even became millionaires! Also, Alaska's gold is still being mined! In fact, my grandfather and family still run a wealthy gold mine every summer.
In California most travelers left with very little more money than they arrived with.
However I'm not going to do all your homework! Do some research you'll appreciate American History more! Have a good day!

How did the California gold rush miners influence the growth of communities or the demise of communities?
Most of the miners that came to California for the gold rush never got rich. Instead they scraped a living by working for mining companies who began buying up claims and opening mines. As these mines opened, the area was usually isolated and mining companies usually provided housing for the men. Some times they grew big enough to from towns and even cities. As soon as the ore body was exhausted, the mine would close and the supporting businesses surrounding would fail as well, people moved out and the town would fail.

Was only gold mined during the Cali gold rush or what? I need to answer this for a science project and can't find my answer anywhere! Help please!!!
The specific geology of California (which I am not very familiar with), has favoured the preservation of alluvial gold. This alluvial gold has probably been derived from host rocks that contain some gold, but not generally in sufficient concentration to be economically exploitable. (There are some diamonds in California however - something few people know about - perhaps during the gold rush, they recovered some alluvial diamonds also.)
The gold derived from the host rock is preferentially preserved over the other detritus as these materials fall into stream beds and become washed downstream. Since the gold is so heavy, it therefore resists movement, thus becoming more concentrated.
It is probable that there would be small amounts of silver (around 5%) as the alluvial gold is usually not completely pure. Having worked on alluvial gold projects in other parts of the world, 92% chemically pure gold seems to be the norm. The other three percent is from other generally low value impurities - copper, lead, zinc etc.
The important thing to consider is that only bright shiny yellow metal is recovered BUT when this is refined it produces a slightly lesser amount of chemical gold together with these other metals.
Have a glance through these other references too.
How did the california gold rush of 1848 & 1849 effect the development of the United States?
I am going to "simplify" this answer: It promoted "Manifest Destiny". In short, it sparked the western expansion and conquering of Indian Nations; and the settling of the mid-west and western United States.
Definition by Yahoo:
NOUN: 1. A policy of Imperialistic Expansion defended as necessary or benevolent.
2. often Manifest Destiny The 19th century doctrine that the United States had the right and duty to expand throughout the North American continent.
