when you leave your computer on stand by, does it waste electricity?
Just as much as leaving it off. It only uses enough to keep the info stored on the ram. Basically this is the amount of energy your watch or ti-83 calculator use when they are off. The only real way to save electricity is to unplug the computer. The circuit still goes even while the computer is off because there is enough resistance to create a circuit. Therefore, any plugged in appliance wastes electricity even when it is off. I read once that an absurd amount of electricity is wasted this way. But, anyway, you aren't wasting elec by putting it to sleep v. shutting it off

I have heard some people say that it can suction you underneath if you stand to close. Is standing by the gate signals too close?
Rex, ya want to stay back as far as practical.
Though a train can scatter all over hell at any time or place is one consideration, but there are many more frequent dangers involved.
A shifted load, protruding lumber, something falling off the train or, and the most common, broken metal bands that are used to bind lumber on flat cars. These break often and they don't have to drag on the ground very far to become razor sharp. It will cut you in two quicker than a samurai can...
My boyfriend's stopover in Atlanta is 12 hours long and he'd rather just take the next available flight. He's going to be on stand-by. What are the chances that they'll give that to him? What is the procedure and what does it depend on?
It all depends on the airline and the number of confirmed passengers.
What he needs to do is go to the gate he wants to get on, tell the gate agent what flight he is booked on and ask him/her if he can be added to the standby list. Depending on the passenger load of that flight he may or may not get on. I would tell him that if he doesn't get on that flight, just keep "gate hopping" until he can get on.
Keep in mind that it is summer time and a lot of families are on summer vacation. So, a weekend flight he probably will not get on. The best days (I've found) for riding standby are Tuesdays and Thursdays.
As another reminder, he should be reminded to thank the gate agent whether he gets on or not. Be very friendly to them. It may help in getting him on that flight or another one shortly thereafter.
Stand by me, the movie, How do the families of the boys play a big part in the movie, examples?
Lets break it down.
Gordie--his father resented him because the son he loved more died and Gordie thinks his father wanted it to be him instead of Denny.
Teddy-- He still had faith in his dad and wanted to follow in his footsteps but just refused to face the fact that his dad was troubled in the mind. eg him burning his ear off on the stove.
Verne-- He was just a hard headed kid looking for pennies when he overheard the story about the dead boy Ray Brower. He was a pushover and was in a family of hoods. but you only see the brother in that setting. but a hood just the same.
Chris-- I think he was just lonely period. I mean it seems to me all his dad did was drink and smoke cigarettes and sleep other wise how could he have stolen the gun and the smokes. He was one of those kids who had to Root, Hog , or die on his own, but still had the company of his friends. I hope this interpretation is what you were looking for.
