Please, don't give away anything about the movie! I just want to know how appropriate it is.
I'm not concerned on how appropriate it is on violence and language though.
There are several references to sexual acts, none too graphic. Brief scenes of differant rooms of people having sex in a hotel, one being an orgy. A scene with brief male nudity after a character is chased out of a room while having sex, which we cannot see.
Nothing bad enough to stop someone from watching this film, its very good.
Cidade de Deus marcou época na história do cinema brasileiro. Agora, você poderá conferir a história do conjunto habitacional Cidade de Deus ...
(also known as City of God)
It's very expensive to buy a copy in the U.S., so go to your local public library and request it from interlibrary loan.
I did a WorldCat search for it (WorldCat = the world's largest library database). You can find it in the Chicago, Brooklyn, and San Francisco public libraries, and in a ton of university libraries, in almost every state in the country.
Just go to your local public library, tell them you're looking for "Cidade de Deus" by Paulo Lins, and you want to do an interlibrary loan request.
Oh, it's also in the original Portuguese on scribd as a downloadable pdf file, if that format's any good for you. You have to sign up for the site, I think (but it's free).
I watched it and loved it! When I was watching this year's Slumdog Millionaire, I kept thinking of City of God.
... and is Tropa de Elite actually Cidade de Deus 3???
Ive only seen Cidade de Deus.. very good
hmm i didnt know there was a sequal tho.
which side of the argument does it support in the "nature-nurture" theory? rocket and li'l ze were raised in similar conditions, yet they turned out so differently. of course the question isn't specific to city of god.. that's just an example
both ties together. usually it both depends on the nature and nurture. but in city of god, i guess its more nurture when looking at rocket's character. but for all the other characters, it was both nature and nurture. but more nature since it is a third world flim which its main idea is to show the nature of brazil and how children are brought up to live the criminal life since it's the only mode to survive.
but in other cases, theres been studies where twins were raised in different areas and one grew up homosexual and the other was straight.
though in the same study using different twins, those both became homosexual/heterosexual. (also ties into the question of whether sexuality has any biological factors.)
