What is the significance of Kurtz being murdered in Apocalypse now rather than saved in Heart of Darkness?
teniszpályák most / tennis-court now

In HoD, Marlow tries to save kurtz and bring him home. However, in Apocalypse Now, Coppola has Kurtz murdered. Why did he change this part of the story and why is it important?

You have to look at the culture of both the book and the film, and think cinematically. In the US military, when you have an order, you follow that order. Sheen's order was to kill Kurtz.

Also, there is the sense, of a great military leader who has gone awry, that there is honor in death (usually by his own hand, such as Roman soliders committing suicide, samuari, etc), but in order be saved, and to not be viewed as dishonorable, he had to be killed or else his name would be humiliated and dishonored.

Plus, it is much more dramatic that he be killed in the film (just think if he had been saved, it would have ruined the film).

What is the necklace viewfinder that Francis Ford Coppola uses while directing Apocalypse Now?
Apocalypse Now

I know that it's not a conventional Directors Viewfinder, like the Mark Vb. I also remember that Brett Ratner has one and used it for Rush Hour. You can see these in either of the special features behind-the-scene for either Apocalypse Now or Rush Hour.

That is called a Director's Viewfinder. You can see an example of one here:

It is basically a zoom lens that some directors carry around to help them pick out where they want to place the camera for a particular shot. This is much easier to carry around than lugging an entire camera from place to place when deciding how they want set up a shot. The director and cinematographer both use viewfinders like this so they can both see and discuss the choice of camera angle and lens for each shot.

Where can I find a great book/website about the filming/production of Apocalypse Now?
Achtung!

I'd like to find a book or a website, or even a documentary, about the filming and production of Apocalypse now. I'd like this source to be detailed and of a good length, so I could use it for a research project. I already know about the documentary "Heart of Darkness: A Flimmaker's Apocalypse, so other sources would be more useful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

This inteview can be read online:

Amazon has these books available:
"The Apocalypse Now Book" by Peter Cowie
"Apocalypse Now" by Karl French
"Notes on the Making of Apocalypse Now" by Eleanor Coppola

I hope these help; it sounds like a fascinating project.
